Couples Counselling
Common relationship dynamics that I address in my practice:
a) The ‘Roommate Trap’: Even the best, loving relationships can fall into the ‘roommate trap’ where couples gradually shift from being romantic partners to functioning more like cohabiting roommates. This often happens when daily responsibilities, routines, and life stressors take priority over emotional intimacy and passion. This is where couples may find themselves at a crossroads in deciding whether to stay together or go separate ways.
b) Repeating Cycles: This is where couples go through the same communication and argument patterns that eventually lead to a build up of tension, walking on eggshells, unrealistic expectations and a breakdown of communication. Both sides don’t feel heard even when the effort is made.
c) Pursuer - Distancer Relationship: One partner desires open communication, the other interprets this as confrontation and an attack on their character so they avoid and distance themselves. Nothing hurts the Pursuer more than silence and lack of acknowledgment so they keep pursuing as an effort to try to rescue the relationship. The Distancer continues to feel put on the spot, stuck in a freeze state, and feels unable to live up to their partner’s expectations.
Goal of Couples Counselling: Kiersty unpacks the core limiting beliefs, love languages, attachment styles and nuances of each relationship to help couples hear each other differently and connect more deeply to their emotions.
